Homecoming 1973 volume 8 no. 9 — university of north Carolina at asheville — January 18, 1973! Homecoming plans are announced Student Government Associa tion Social Commissioner Sam Ferguson announced this week the slate of activities and events that will comprise the 1972-73 UNC-A Homecoming Weekend. There is a wide variety of events spread over the three day week end that begins on Friday. One of the highlights of the weekend will, be the crowning of the 1972-73 Homecoming Queen. Students cast their votes this week in the election sponsored by the SGA and the Social Com mission. The new Homecoming Queen will be crowned at half time of the UNC-A — Lander basketball game in the UNC-A gym. She will be crowned by Vivian Case, the present Home coming Queen. Homecoming weekend will begin on Friday at 2:30 on the Break-ins frequent UNC-A soccer field located behind the dormitory 'village. A variety of events has been designed by Ferguson and by-Karen Head, Ms. UNC-A who assisted the Social Commission with plans for the weekend. The Co-Ed Capers will last much of the afternoon and will be followed by Funtime at 6:30 in the Student Center. Music and live entertainment are planned along with several other events for the Friday evening. The weekend festivities will continue on Saturday night as the Bulldog cagers play host to Lander Col lege on the hardwood at the UNC-A gym. Ganietime is slated for 8:00 p.m. with the , crowning of the new Home coming Queen to take place during Imlftime of the game. Immediately after the basket ball game, there will be a dance for UNC-A students and their guests at the Greek Community Center. The dance is slated to Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose will replace the Chambers Brothers in concert on Sunday at 2 o’clock p.m. begm at 10:00 p.m. Free beer and set-ups will be provided. Admission to the dance is free to all UNC-A students who have a student ID card and their dates. One of the highlights of the Homecoming weekend will be the last of the festivities. At 2:30 Sunday afternoon the gym will host The Cornelius Brothers in concert. The group has been popular for the last several years and have' released numerous hit records. Also appearing with the ' Cornelius Brothers, in concert will be the Divots and Butch and One break-in and an attempt ed break-in in recent weeks have moved campus officials to take strong security measures on campus to prevent future thefts and attempted thefts. Dave Anders, manager of the campus radio station WUNF reported to THE RIDGERUNNER that the station was entered sometime between Christmas Day and New Years. Joyce Williams, manager of the Campus Bookstore, reported last week that a break-in was attempted at the store. When asked about the pos sibility of someone having en tered the Campus Store, she commented that it appeared that an attempt to enter the store was made but appeared to have been unsuccessful. A window near the rear door of the store was broken but it is believed that no one actually entered the store. She said that a theft could not have been determined unless a full inventory of the store was conducted and that such an in ventory was not now planned. sports - page 4 Mrs. Williams pointed out that inventory for the campus store is conducted once a year. Vice- Chancellor for Finance William Pott was contacted by THE RIDGERUNNER and stated that an inventory would not be conducted until late June or early continued - page 3 UNC-A acquires a campus doctor A sincere interest in UNC-A and the desire work with young people are the main reasons that have brought Dr. Claude E. Steen to the UNC-A campus as a physician. Dr. Steen will be in attendance at the infirmary three imes weekly between the hours of 8:30 and 9:30 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Dr. Steen’s services are available to any full time student I without charge. . Dr. Steen brings with him an outstanding background that in cludes twelve years of experience as a medical missionary in Ethi opia. Steen returned to the United States in 1959 and set up practice in Asheville, where he has been ever since. Steen is a family doctor and has four sons of his own, one of which is currently enrolled in medical school. On his coming to UNC-A Steen slates, “1 felt it was a step in up grading the medical profession, also 1 am very much interested in education and UNC-A in part- ticul^r.” Steen goes on to say, “a man stays young by being associated with the young people, being here at the university gives me the chance to help bridge to genera tion gap between young and old and the opportunity to bring about belter health to the students.” Eddie. Tickets for the Cornelius Brothers concert are available at the reception desk in the Administration ' Building, from Radio Station WUNF, and from campus organizations. Tickets for students with ID cards will be $2.00 each. Advance tickets for non-students will be $4.00 and $5.00 at the door on Sunday afternoon. All of the events of Home coming weekend will be open to all UNC-A students and all students are invited to participate in the events. Ridgerunner may become a weekly? “I wish The RIDGERUNNER came out more often ...” That was a remark that appeared numerous times last term when stu dents were polled concerning the campus paper. In response to such student sentiment. The RIDGERUNNER Staff is pre paring a request for an increased budget allotment that would allow a weekly publication schedule. The request will be filed with the Senate of the Stu dent Government Association, and if approved, would make The RIDGERUNNER a weekly newspaoer for the first - time in its existence. Careful and diligent con sideration was given to this issue by The RIDGERUNNER Staff before a decision was reached to file the request. A weekly pub lication would be designed to improve communication and in formation on the campus-wide scale. During the first semester of this academic year. The RIDGERUNNER was a bi-weekly publication. The move to a weekly publication schedule, pending the allocation of addi tional funds, is a reflection of the continued - page 4 Federal employment group to visit UNC-A on friday This Friday, January 19, the UNC-A Placement Service will 'host the annual Federal Employ ment Outlet Program from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the lobby of theLipinsky Student Center. The program is sponsored by the United States Civil Service Commission and the Raleigh area office which is co-ordinating the activity according to Acting Area Manager, Philip B. Belt. Bob Jamison, Senior Staffing Special ist for the Raleigh office will co ordinate the events for the day. This marks the first time that such a job placement program has come to the UNC-A campus. The commission feels that UNC-A is more centerally located then the previous location of the program and has of late become interested in liberal ans graduates. riie purpose of the program is to permit junior and senior stu dents from the area’s institutions of higher education an oppor tunity to learn what the various federal agencies have to offer in the way of career opportunities. The various representatives of the agencies will not be taking applications for employment at this time, but will be offering in formation and procedures to follow in seeking a career with the federal government upon grad uation.
